In this case after the boy had struggled and slipped under the water for about 1-2 mins it was his classmates who first noticed him under water. After the boy was pulled from the water, CPR was not started by the lifeguards. But rather it begin when members of the Murrieta Fire Department arrived, according to the district. “ Had the appropriate care been given to Alex sooner, had CPR been given sooner to Alex – he would be here with us today.” – Robert Glassman, the family’s attorney.

According the Murreita Police, approximately 100 other band and choir students were attending an “end of the year” party. The incident was captured on video and showed no other students were involved in horse play. Rather, that the boy floated into an area that he could no longer stand in.  In fact, it was his classmate that noticed and pulled him up out of the water.

Better lifeguard training and accountability

This incident shows the need for better lifeguard training and accountability. The most important lesson is that CPR needs to be given asap. In order to administer CPR it’s important to be trained in it and keep your training fresh.  In one given weekend in Orange County this year, six near drownings of kids under 3 in a 24-hour period, lead to no deaths.  5 of the 6 receiving CPR and chest compression pool side. Timing and knowledge of CPR are essential partners in saving life.

CPR training is as important as swimming lessons.

Learn CPR

Learn CPR and understand that it’s important even if life guards are present as in the case of this Murrieta boy, or at home in the residential swimming pool. Although it’s important to secure your pool with safety devices and barriers including removable mesh pool fence, pool safety nets, pool alarms and swimming pool safety covers, pool owners need the “layered” approach to swimming pool safety.

The Layered approach

The Layered approach starts with super-vision and the main ingredient. Then asks pool owners to use more than one step in pool safety. For Pool Safety  in Temecula, Murreita, Menifee this means installing one or more safety devices for the young kids and combining it with CPR training. While Fatal Drownings in Pools Involving Young Children Decreases by 17 percent nationwide since 2010. CPR training can continue to save more lives.
